By far my coolest experience in Laos was the night I got tricked into teaching English to a college class. During my stay I lived in a guest house where I made friends with a lot of the staff there. Towards the end of my internship, work at the office was drying up and I didn’t have much to do, so of course I welcomed any invitation to do anything whatsoever. So my friend asked me if I wanted to come out with him for an evening so his friends could practice their English on me. I said yes and next thing I know I’m dodging in and out of speeding cars, holding on for dear life in downtown Vientiane. When we arrive at the location, it looked less like a place where a bunch of this guys buddies would hang out, and more like a school. We walk across this dark field where thousands of mosquitos decide to attack me and there are parked motor bikes everywhere. I see a light coming up and follow him ... right into a college class full of about 45 Lao people wanting to learn English. Then I make the connection, he has brought me here to teach his college class English. Shit. I can barely speak in front of 5 people without getting nervous! Nonetheless, it turned out great, everyone had a blast and it was really neat to be in that role.
